How does the law stand on private property perimeter barriers in the UK?
I own a lone-standing 2-storey house on the south-west coast of England, and I wish to build either a fence or a wall around the perimeter of my property. I would like the wall to be at least six, more like seven foot high, with a Gate over the driveway and a smaller gate at the side to walk through.
I have already assumed on the requirement for planning permission, that’s not what concerns me. My question is this:
Suppose it is late at night, or I am simply not in the mood for surprise visitors. Do I have a legal right under UK law to lock the gates and turn off the doorbell, or am I obligated to allow a limited access in case someone such as a police officer or a government employee wishes to visit me?
Bearing in mind I would always have a letterbox by the gate available if somebody wishes to leave a note, and a sign pointing this out.
You are under no obligation to be contactable. If you don’t want visitors, you are allowed to lock the gate and disable the doorbell. If the police (for example) wanted to talk to you, they would just come back later – unless you were being raided/arrested in which case they would break down the gate and the front door.
You don’t have a legal right to do that, specified in the law, but it would not be illegal for you to do this.
